What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?

I've had such a thirst for a great scary movie lately but I don't know where to start. I've only turned one movie off because it was too scary for me. Wait for it.........Candyman. Dang that candyman. That sorry sucker scared the crap out of me. I finished it but only after turning all of the lights in the living room on and waiting an hour. It was like I had just eaten and wanted to go swimming but had to wait so I wouln't get cramps.

To me, there's stupid scary, there's good scary, and there's scared to go to sleep and dream about that stuff scary. Blood and gore doesn't really scare me. You might think it's cliche but unexplained stuff like The Shining is scary to me. Those twins are freaking crazy. Shelly Duvall, Whoa! Yeah, when I think about it, it's the unexplained stuff that gets me.

I'd love to hear what you think, if not just to add some movies to the rental stack.

You're dead on. I haven't seen a scary movie in years. The Ring was horrible and Freddie vs. Jason was just campy. I think the last time I was really freaked out was when I saw Silence of the Lambs in the theater. Towards the end when Clarice is in the dark and you're looking at her through nightvision goggles, that was intense and I nearly poo'd myself when he reached for her. That and any movie with evil kids.

i think the unexplained stuff is the scariest, too. i'm not a big horror fan, but seven is still one of the creepiest to me. oddly enough, one of the scariest things in that movie is when they go to Kevin Spacey's apartment and find all those thousands of notebooks and you just know this dude has been crazy for a LONG time.

i actually thought the ring was scary, but it was more residual scary when i thought about it later. i'm a wuss, though.

During the summers growing up, my parents shipped us (my sis and I) off to our grandparents in PA. There I would stay up and watch Nightmare on Elm Street religiously. I loved Freddie. Man that dude was creepy. And I just ate up every minute of it. Which could explain why any time Satan wants to take a pot shot at me he tries it by coming through my dreams.

One random movie that really freaked me out was Event Horizon. Its more sci-fi, but its about a ship that quantum leaps to hell and brings some of it back. I love quantum mechanics so the idea was intriguing. Meanwhile, I couldn't sleep for days. Also noteworthy, the classic Exorcist. Not the new piece of crap. Oooo, and It. Talk about freak you out. Loved it.

I also hate movies involving children. Children of the Corn. Sheesh. Some things you should not do. Involving children in demonic struggles with evil, not cool.

As I've gotten older and moved away from the gore movies, I've found a new found respect for pshcyological thrillers. The Bone Collector, Kiss the Girls, Seven, Saw, brilliant! I like to figure it out before the movie ends. Because I'm a big nerd.

The Ring is pretty much me and cris' favorite of the last few years. I thought Ring 2 sucked Dawn Kebals but that's just my opinions. Silence of the lambs is truly a classic. Not many people dug the Hannibal movie but Cris and I listened to the book on tape on one of our trips to Hot Springs and it freaked me out.

Seven is the one and only movie that I promised my mom that I wouldn't watch. I think her and my dad rented it without knowing what it was. I did promise her that I wouldn't(even though I was like 20 or something) and I lasted for a couple of years but finally caught it one night when some friends were all watching it.
The exorcist is a classic. I haven't seen the new stuff just because of word of mouth.
I've seen event horizon and liked it a lot.
Saw was amazing. I've never seen anything like it.
